Weekend Box Office Roundup (June 29-July 1)
1. Ted (N)
$54.10 million ($54.10 million)
I've got a review of Ted coming soon (I was out of town again this past weekend, so I'm still playing catchup), but I will say that Seth MacFarlane's directorial debut deserved the weekend's top box office spot. With an original and ridiculous concept, Ted definitely earned the distinction of being the non-sequel rated-R movie with the best opening weekend numbers. It's $54.10 million topped the original The Hangover's $44.98 million.
It'll be interesting to see how Ted performs next weekend when it's up against The Amazing Spider-Man. Universal moved the movie from its original debut date a week before The Dark Knight Rises to this past weekend, probably figuring if it had to pick a superhero movie to go up against, The Amazing Spider-Man was the lesser of the two evils.
2. Magic Mike (N)
$39.16 million ($39.16 million)
While I didn't see Magic Mike, I did see the line of girls waiting for the midnight screening on Thursday. Ted won the weekend, but it didn't even have a line. Magic Mike may stick around for awhile, considering that it appeals to a demographic that might not overlap with the Amazing Spider-Man crowd. Also, if Channing Tatum wasn't a box office star before this, he's locked that role up now.
3. Brave (1)
$34.01 million ($131.67 million)
To go along with Ted, I also have a Brave review coming. I hate being behind on these things, but it happens sometimes. Box office-wise, I don't see Brave continuing to chug along like other Pixar films have. Just two years ago, Toy Story 3 not only set records for animated films its opening weekend, but it rode extremely positive word of mouth to future big weekends. Brave doesn't have that going for it.

4. Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection (N)
$26.35 million ($26.35 million)
Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection had the fourth highest opening of any Tyler Perry brand movie, kind of continuing a downward trend for Perry. After 2009's Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail opened to $41.03 million, Perry's films haven't gotten anywhere near that big of an opening.
5. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2)
$11.82 million ($180.01 million)
The third Madagascar installment is now just under $14 million away from being the franchise's top-grossing movie. Of course, when you count in 3D tickets, this isn't a shock.
Next week's predictions:
1. The Amazing Spider-Man
2. Ted
3. Magic Mike
4. Savages
5. Brave
