Weekend Box Office Roundup (Aug. 3-5)

1. The Dark Knight Rises (1)
$36.44 million ($354.64 million)
So we can declare anyone who was saying that The Dark Knight Rises was having box office problems a moron now, right? Seriously, I'm still shaking my head over Yahoo! and other websites who were running that kind of headline last week. With a $36.44 million third weekend, The Dark Knight Rises ties Avatar for third quickest to $350 million at the domestic box office, reaching the milestone in 17 days. The Avengers did it in 10 days, while The Dark Knight did it in 14 days. Not a bad group of movies to be in when it comes to box office records.

Will The Dark Knight Rises be able to hold onto the No. 1 spot at the box office for a fourth weekend? The Bourne Legacy and The Campaign both hit theaters next week, and should give Christopher Nolan's masterpiece just a bit of competition.

2. Total Recall (N)
$26.00 million ($26.00 million)
Funny story: I fully intended on seeing Total Recall at a midnight Thursday screening. Somehow, though, I wasn't paying attention to what time it was, got into my car and drove about three block before realizing it was 11:55 p.m., not 10:55 p.m. With a sigh, I turned around a drove back home, knowing there was no way I was going to make it to a movie that started in five minutes. Based on Total Recall's $26.00 million opening mark, I'm going to assume that a lot of other theater goers did the same thing.

3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (N)
$14.70 million ($14.70 million)
In making predictions for this week, I completely left Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days of my list. Did you know that this is the third installment of this series? I had no idea.

4. Ice Age: Continental Drift (2)
$11.80 million ($131.86 million)
Ice Age: Continental Drift hangs in for another weekend in the top five. How many money does it need to gross to make Ice Age: Let's See How Many Other Celebrity Voices We Can Unnecessarily Include a reality?

5. The Watch (3)
$6.35 million ($25.36 million)
Movies that have made more than The Watch in 2012: One for the Money, Rock of Ages, Ghost Ride: Spirit of Vengeance and two Tyler Perry movies. I totally expect Tyler Perry Presents Madea's Neighborhood Watch to outgross The Watch when that movie inevitably gets made.

Next week's predictions:
1. The Bourne Legacy
2. The Dark Knight Rises
3. The Campaign
4. Total Recall
5. Hope Springs
