Weekend Box Office Roundup (August 10-12)

1. The Bourne Legacy (N)
$40.27 million ($40.27 million)
The return of the Bourne franchise managed to do what Total Recall couldn't do last weekend — dethrone The Dark Knight Rises. The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner as the franchise's new face, opened to $40.27 million, the third best opening for the series. The Bourne Identity debuted to $27.12 million in 2002, but that was before the Bourne franchise became as well known as it is now.

With the Expendables 2, The Odd Life of Timothy Green and ParaNorman being the big openings for next week, it seems likely that The Bourne Legacy will enjoy a second weekend atop the box office chart. And, it seems likely that we'll get to watch another Bourne film's box office performance in a few weeks too.

2. The Campaign (N)
$27.44 million ($27.44 million)
The Campaign's opening number of $27.44 million ranks down the list when it comes to Will Ferrell movies, but one would be surprised to see the history of Ferrell box office openings. Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby is the actor's best opening ($47.04 million), and Anchorman: The Ballad of Ron Burgundy itself only opened to $28.42 million.

3. The Dark Knight Rises (1)
$19.54 million ($390.15 million)
The Dark Knight Rises is about to become only the fifteenth movie to ever gross more $400 million or more at the domestic box office. Who still wants to talk about it being a failure? Yeah, it might not reach $500 million, but only four movies have ever accomplished that feat.

4. Hope Springs (N)
$15.60 million ($20.05 million)
Well, I didn't see Hope Springs this past weekend, but based on the fact that it's Meryl Streep film, I'm guessing that I'll have to down the road as part of my Oscar prep.

5. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (3)
$8.20 million ($30.56 million)
Who sees these movies? Honestly, I've never talked to anyone who's like, "Hey, you know what I did with my weekend? I saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dogs Day! After seeing the last Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I just couldn't sleep until I saw this one!" That's never happened.

Next week's predictions:
1. The Bourne Legacy
2. The Expendables 2
3. The Dark Knight Rises
4. The Campaign
5. ParaNorman
