Weekend Box Office Roundup (September 14-16)

1. Resident Evil: Retribution (N)
$21.10 million ($21.10 million)
After several dismal weekends in a row, the box office rebounded slightly this past weekend, with Resident Evil: Retribution and the 3D release of Finding Nemo leading the way. Beyond the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, the top five was still pretty poor, with The Possession, Lawless and ParaNorman staggering in to fill in the set.

Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth installment in the franchise, grossed $21.10 million, enough to win the box office but less than its four predecessors debuted to. Are moviegoers growing tired of Paul W.S. Anderson's (not to be confused with The Master's Paul Thomas Anderson — they make quite different movies) series?

2. Finding Nemo 3D (N)
$17.50 million ($17.50 million)*
Finding Nemo is one of the most successful animated movies of all time, but wound up having the lowest debut of Disney's 3D re-releases, behind The Lion King's $30.15 million and Beauty and the Beast's $17.75 million. With Monsters, Inc. slated for a 3D re-release in December, Disney and Pixar have to hoping the 3D bubble hasn't burst.

3. The Possession (1)
$5.80 million ($41.17 million)
The Possession was No. 1 at the box office for two straight weekends and all it has to show for it is $41.17 million. Looking back, The Possession didn't win those weekends — every other movie just lost them.

4. Lawless (2)
$4.22 million ($40.14 million)
This one still baffles me. This is a great movie with a great cast. It's beautifully shot. Why aren't you guys seeing it? Seriously. Providing The Master isn't yet playing where you live, make Lawless the movie you see this next week.

5. ParaNorman (5)
$3.04 million ($49.34 million)
Yawn. When does Wreck-It Ralph come out again?

Next week's predictions:
1. Dredd
2. Resident Evil: Retribution
3. Finding Nemo 3D
4. Trouble with the Curve
5. The House at the End of the Street

*Total gross in 3D release. Finding Nemo already grossed roughly $350 million the first time it was in theaters.
