REPORT: New 'Star Wars' Trilogy Will Focus on Luke Skywalker

As soon as the news broke on Tuesday that Star Wars: Episode VII was coming our way in 2015 people began speculating whether or not the new trilogy would focus on Luke Skywalker and other characters from the Original Trilogy. According to a report published by TheWrap on Wednesday, the new trilogy will focus on the Son of Skywalker, with the character now in his 30s or 40s.
The stories for “Star Wars” episodes seven, eight and nine, which George Lucas has outlined and the Walt Disney Company will produce and release, are “the most exciting” in the series, the filmmaker’s biographer told TheWrap on Wednesday.
“It was originally a 12-part saga,” Pollock told TheWrap. “The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies.’”
Well, if the next Star Wars trilogy is going to once again focus on Luke, get ready to see a new actor play the character. Just as George Lucas brought in Ewan McGregor to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Prequel Trilogy, it shouldn't be a surprise that new actors will play classic characters in future Star Wars movies, especially if Disney plans to extend the franchise beyond Episode VII, Episode VIII and Episode IX.

Here's where it gets even more interesting. Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker himself, talked to Entertainment Weekly today, revealing that Lucas had told him last summer that a new trilogy was on its way.

EW asked Hamill whether or not Lucas had discussed the actor reprising his iconic role in the new trilogy, and he had the following to say:
Well, no, he was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldn’t be directing. I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew. He said, “Now you can’t tell anybody!” [Laughs] Even now I’m nervous about saying anything. I just don’t know!
I realize that there are a lot of people out there who want to see Hamill come back in the new Star Wars movies. They want to see him assume the role of an elder Jedi, passing the Force on to a new generation. I'm torn on that.

Look at the rest of the original Star Wars cast. Harrison Ford is half-coherent in any movie he does now (and completely incoherent in any TV interview he does). Carrie Fisher all pretty much burned any bridges she had with Star Wars. If you bring Hamill back, would you have to bring everyone else back too? These actors mean so much to the Star Wars community, but if they're going to weigh the thing down, Disney has to move on.
