BOX OFFICE REPORT (NOV. 30-DEC. 2): 'Twilight' Remains No. 1 While Brad Pitt's 'Killing Them Softly' Flops

This was a weird weekend at the box office. After a massive Thanksgiving weekend haul, things naturally fell back to Earth. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 remained No. 1, holding the top spot for the third weekend in a row. The rest of the top five remained the same, with Skyfall, Lincoln, Rise of the Guardians and Life of Pi all holding onto their positions from last weekend. The biggest box office story is the flop of Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly. The film debuted at No. 7, making only $7 million. Dominik and Pitt make great movies together (see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Crawford if you haven't yet), but they can't seem to find a box-office hit.

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 (1)
$17.41 million ($254.59 million)
Breaking Dawn 2 currently ranks No. 4 among the five Twilight movies, pulling in $254.59 million over three weeks. Can the final Twilight movie join The Twilight Saga: Eclipse as the only installments to cross the $300 million mark?

2. Skyfall (2)
$17.00 million ($246.04 million)
After four weekends in release, Skyfall has passed every James Bond box office record possible. Globally, the film is about $130 million short of hitting $1 billion, and with its release in China still to come, Skyfall should make that happen.

3. Lincoln (3)
$13.51 million ($83.70 million)
With this past weekend's box office numbers, Lincoln becomes Steven Spielberg's highest-grossing movie since 2008's Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. The director is a big fan of his "one for me/one for them" philosophy when it comes to picking his projects, and that definitely shows up in his box office track record.

4. Rise of the Guardians (4)
$13.50 million ($48.95 million)
With Rise of the Guardians failing to catch fire with moviegoers, you have to wonder if DreamWorks could have better positioned the movie by releasing it closer to Christmas. Yeah, I know that a bunch of holidays are represented in the movie, but Alec Baldwin's version of Santa Claus could've taken advantage of our severe lack of Santa Clause sequels.

5. Life of Pi (5)
$12.00 million ($48.36 million)
It's always great to see Oscar contenders doing well at the box office. I caught a screening of Life of Pi on Saturday, and the theater was pretty full. The Oscars need movies like this that fans can root for (and  give people a reason to watch the televised ceremony).

Next week's predictions:
1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2
2. Skyfall
3. Lincoln
4. Playing for Keeps
5. Life of Pi
