TBS Renews 'Conan,' Locks in Conan O'Brien Until 2015
When it comes to the upcoming game of late-night musical chairs, TBS just took its biggest piece off the board ... for 2014, at least. The network announced on Monday that it had renewed Conan O'Brien's late-night show for an additional year, keeping the host with TBS until 2015.
*Popculturology was also one of the first to offer Seth Meyers' name as the favorite to replace Jimmy Fallon as the host of Late Night, a theory that picked up major traction the following day.
“When we invited Conan O’Brien to come to TBS, we knew he would bring with him a passionately loyal following of young adults,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS. “Conan and his colleagues at Team Coco have gone far beyond that by making Conan the top late-night brand in the digital arena. We are proud to extend our relationship with Conan as he continues to forge the future of late night. I just wish we didn’t decide to tell him on April Fools’ Day.”O'Brien's previous contract with TBS was originally scheduled to expire in 2014, making him a late-night free agent in the same year as Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman and Craig Ferguson. Popculturology was one of the first to predict that Letterman would retire from Late Show after NBC retired Leno, and that O'Brien would leave TBS to replace Letterman at CBS.* We still stand by this theory, only now it seems that some of the major pieces of the late-night puzzle won't move until after 2014.
