New 'Clone Wars' Clip Hints at Answers to One of the Biggest Unsolved 'Star Wars' Mysteries

While I've been pretty enthusiastic about the future of a Disney-owned Star Wars franchise, one of my biggest regrets of the process was the cancellation of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Over its five seasons, The Clone Wars matured into not only one of the best animated series on TV but also the key element keeping Star Wars alive. Very often, The Clone Wars outdid the Prequel Trilogy in both action and storytelling. With the way Season 5 ended, I was looking forward to what Star Wars had planned for us next.

While Star Wars: The Clone Wars has ended its televised run, supervising director Dave Filoni talked about the future of the franchise with USA Today and even shared a clip from what I'm guessing would have been the show's sixth season. (This actually isn't the first time we've seen hints at what Season 6 would have held, with Filoni also previewing a clip in March of Clone Troopers showing signs of the future Order 66.)

"There are questions that are pretty big as far as it comes with the Clone Wars and things that people have wanted to know," Filoni says. "They're just these concepts just hanging out there, and finally we're going to deal with them."
One of the arcs stars Jedi Master Plo Koon (voiced by James Arnold Taylor), who finds a lost lightsaber while on a mission on a sandstorm-laden planet with a platoon of clone troopers. It's the beginning of a mystery, and one that will make the Jedi question their role in the Clone Wars and the universe itself, according to Filoni.

And what might that mystery be? Keep reading and check out the Star Wars: The Clone Wars clip after the jump.

One of the biggest loose ends from the Prequel Trilogy was the mystery of Sifo-Dyas, the Jedi who ordered the Clone Army. While Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones made a huge deal about Obi-Wan Kenobi investigating who Sifo-Dyas was and why he commissioned the army, Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith completely dropped the storyline. According to Filoni, that story's not over yet ...

"The Jedi have been fighting a war with an army that was commissioned by one of their own, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas," he says. "But who was Sifo-Dyas, and what happened to him? The dark lord of the Sith has woven an intricate web to ensnare the Jedi, but it is not full-proof and sometimes a small clue, and a bit of chance, can lead to the unraveling of the best-laid plans."

Smart money has always been on Palpatine being the one who ordered the Clone Army — Sidious equals Sifo-Dyas, right? — but without the constraints of the movies, The Clone Wars could easily find a different and better answer to this mystery. USA Today reports that the where and when in terms of these new The Clone Wars tales airing is still to be announced, animators are hard at work, giving fans of the show hope that it's not over yet.
