Joss Whedon Reveals That Hank Pym Won't Create Ultron in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

When Joss Whedon announced that the sequel to The Avengers would be called Avengers: Age of Ultron, a lot of us assumed this meant that we'd see Hank Pym in the movie, introducing the character before he got his own movie in Ant-Man. It made sense, as Pym has always been the one who created Ultron, giving life to the android who would later turn against the Avengers and humanity.

Well, I guess we assumed wrong on this one. In a Comic-Con interview, the director revealed that Pym wouldn't be in Avengers: Age of Ultron nor would he be the one to build the android.

"We're doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron. In the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. He's not. We're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside." 

"We're crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It's a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There's a science fiction theme that wasn't there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we're going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as it was from the comics; particularly Ultron."

So if Pym isn't the one to create Ultron, who does? The most obvious candidate would be Tony Stark. We know that Robert Downey Jr. is on board for this movie. We saw in Iron Man 3 that Stark had created suits that could operate absent of him, with one even almost attacking Pepper in the middle of the night. All of the necessary pieces are there to tell a story where one of Stark's suits gains intelligence and goes rogue. Would that mean Paul Bettany would go from voicing JARVIS to voicing Ultron? Or is this where Vin Diesel's much-rumored Marvel Cinematic Universe comes in?
