BOX OFFICE REPORT (AUG. 30-SEPT. 1): 'One Direction: This Is Us' Tops the Weekend; 'Instructions Not Included' Earns Shocking No. 5 Spot
Well, that was a weird weekend at the box office. Despite being Labor Day weekend, no single movie dominated the charts. One Direction: This Is Us opened to a decent $17 million to win the weekend. Lee Daniels' The Butler, We're the Millers and Planes all stuck around with unusually small drops. The big story has to Be Instructions Not Included, a Spanish-language film that grossed $7.5 million over just 347 screens for a whopping $21,614 per screen average.
Beyond the top five, Selena Gomez's Getaway opened at No. 9 with $4.51 million. Critics have taken a high level of pleasure in tearing this movie apart.
1. One Direction: This Is Us (N)
Weekend gross: $17.00 million / Total domestic gross: $17.00 million / Percent drop: NA
Kids these days may love One Direction, but that affection didn't translate the box office. One Direction: This Is Us couldn't match the opening weekends of previous concert movies like Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Michael Jackson's This Is It.
2. Lee Daniels' The Butler (1)
Weekend gross: $14.74 million / Total domestic gross: $74.01 million / Percent drop: 10.7
Lee Daniels' The Butler keeps chugging along. While the film couldn't hold onto the top spot for a third weekend, The Butler is still very much on the minds of moviegoers and critics, with the film continuously coming up in the Oscar conversation. We're still half a year away from the Academy Awards, but The Butler looks like a Best Picture nominee.

3. We're the Millers (2)
Weekend gross: $12.61 million / Total domestic gross: $109.57 million / Percent drop: 3.4
We're the Millers passed the $100 million mark, becoming Jason Sudeikis' second live-action movie to do so. For Jennifer Aniston, We're the Millers is a great comeback after 2012's Wanderlust was only able to scrounge up $17.45 million domestically.

4. Planes (5)
Planes actually went up from No. 5 to No. 4 this week. Go figure.
5. Instructions Not Included (N)
Weekend gross: $7.50 million / Total domestic gross: $7.50 million / Percent drop: NA
I would love to write more about Instructions Not Included, but the film isn't rated on Rotten Tomatoes nor does it have a Wikipedia page. A film this obscure barely ever makes the top five. I have a feeling we'll all know more about it soon.
Next week's predictions
1. Lee Daniels' The Butler
2. One Direction: This Is Us
3. Riddick
4. We're the Millers
5. Instructions Not Included
