BOX OFFICE REPORT (SEPT. 13-15): 'Insidious: Chapter 2' Scares Away Competition ... I'm Sorry for This Headline

In one weekend, Insidious: Chapter 2 almost matched the lifetime gross of the first Insidious. Not a bad way to lead off this Box Office Report, huh? Unfortunately, while Insidious: Chapter 2's horrors were contained to the big screen, the rest of this weekend's report suffered their horrors at the box office.

Despite being a Robert De Niro gangster movie, The Family failed to connect with a large audience, grossing less than $15 million. Returning movies Riddick, Lee Daniels' The Butler and We're the Millers rounded out the top five, with each of those three failing to cross the $10 million mark.

1. Insidious: Chapter 2 (N)
Weekend gross: $41.05 million / Total domestic gross: $41.05 million / Percent drop: NA
Since Insidious opened to $13.27 million in 2011, director James Wan has started churning out box office hits. The Conjuring debuted with $41.86 million in July, with Insidious: Chapter 2 almost matching that number this past weekend. Wan will next direct Vin Diesel's Fast and Furious 7. I'm guessing his box office winning streak won't stop anytime soon.

2. The Family (N)
Weekend gross: $14.50 million / Total domestic gross: $14.50 million / Percent drop: NA
The Family is a weird movie. It wants to be a gangster movie, even blatantly namedropping Goodfellas. It also wants to be a comedy, allowing De Niro, Michelle Pfieffer, Dianna Agron and John D'Leo to yuk it up as a dysfunctional family. These elements don't quite mesh. It looks like moviegoers figured that out without even setting foot in a theater.

3. Riddick (1)
Weekend gross: $7.01 million / Total domestic gross: $31.28 million / Percent drop: 63.1
A 63 percent drop from its opening weekend doesn't bode well for Riddick. This movie is going to struggle to cross $50 million total.

4. Lee Daniels' The Butler (2)
Weekend gross: $5.58 million / Total domestic gross: $100.04 million / Percent drop: 33.6
Lee Daniels' The Butler finally crossed $100 million. While this is an achievement to be celebrated, it's actually kind of anticlimactic. How many weekends did The Butler win? Four? Unlike last year's critical darlings like Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln, The Butler has been a wide release from the beginning. That combined with those weekend wins should have resulted in a bigger box office number.

5. We're the Millers (4)
Weekend gross: $5.42 million / Total domestic gross: $131.60 million / Percent drop: 29.6
Jason Sudeikis is a movie star now.

Next week's predictions
1. Insidious: Chapter 2
2. Prisoners
3. Riddick
4. Lee Daniels' The Butler
5. We're the Millers
