75 Movies to Get Excited About in 2014 (Part 2)

Popculturology is holding off on releasing our picks for top films of 2013 for a few weeks (look, no one invited us to a screenings of Her or Inside Llewyn Davis, so we're missing a few key pieces), but that doesn't mean we can't start talking about what 2014 has in store for us at the theater. Last year, Popculturology looked at 44 Movies to Get Excited About in 2013. Guess what? This year, we're bringing you a look at 75 movies. All for the same cost. You're welcome. We'll bring you Popculturology's 75 Movies to Get Excited About in 2014 in five installments this week.

Exodus
Dec. 12
Biblical movies are in right now, and Exodus could be the best of the bunch. (Are you supposed to rank Biblical movies against each other?) Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale, Exodus has all the makings of an Oscar contender. Big budget historical epic? Check. Prestige director? Check. Oscar-winning lead? Check. December release date? Check. Let those Oscars go, Academy.



The Expendables 3
Aug. 15
It's probably easier to list the people not appearing in The Expendables 3, as Sylvester Stallone's action franchise just keeps adding random celebs. For all we know, Judy Dench has a cameo too.

The Fault in Our Stars
June 6
Shailene Woodley again, folks. The Divergent actress snagged another huge role with the cinematic adaption of The Fault in Our Stars. The novel has a huge following, which could translate to another big moment for Woodley.



Foxcatcher

Steve Carell is barely recognizable in Foxcatcher, playing assassin John du Pont in the true story of Mark and Dave Schultz, brothers who were also Olympic wrestling champions. Foxcatcher is director Bennett Miller's follow-up to Moneyball, and was widely expected to be a contender at the upcoming Oscars. The film was pushed back to 2014. No new release date has been announced, but a late 2014 opening is likely if Annapurna Pictures wants it in the next round of Oscar competition.

Get On Up
Aug. 1
Tate Taylor, the director of The Help, returns with another film that should be an Oscar contender. Starring 42's Chadwick Boseman, Get On Up is a biopic about singer James Brown.

The Giver
Aug. 15
Your favorite depressing childhood novel is finally going to make it to the big screen, with Oscar winners Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep playing key roles. Hopefully Bridges' version of The Giver at least mentions remembering that he once had a rug that really tied the room together. Oh yeah, Taylor Swift has a role too.



Godzilla
May 16
Forget everything you remember about that awful Godzilla movie that starred Matthew Broderick — from the looks of the first trailer for Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, Warner Bros.' reboot is going to blow us away. Edwards proved he knew how to do a monster movie on a small budget with Monsters, so it's incredibly excited to imagine what he'll do with a massive, tentpole budget. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play a husband and wife in Godzilla, which should make the duo playing a brother and sister in The Avengers: Age of Ultron interesting.

Gone Girl

Before Ben Affleck dons the Batsuit in Batman vs. Superman, he'll star in director David Fincher's adaption of Gone Girl. When Affleck won the role of Nick Dunne, a man trying to find his missing wife, a lot of people remarked that Affleck wasn't exactly who they were picturing when reading Gillian Flynn's novel. With the exception of Runner Runner, Affleck is all about surprising us these days — hopefully he'll surprise his Gone Girl naysayers.



Grace of Monaco
March 14
The royal family of Monaco isn't happy with this film, calling Grace of Monaco "needlessly glamorised and historically inaccurate." But, hey, it's Nicole Kidman playing Grace Kelly. That's a super Oscar-baity premise, so forget what the Monaco royal family thinks.



The Grand Budapest Hotel
March 7
Wes Anderson reunites his usual crew for The Grand Budapest Hotel, casting his favorites like Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Tilda Swinton alongside Ralph Fiennes. Now that Moonrise Kingdom established Anderson as a Oscar nominee, should we expect The Grand Budapest Hotel to be a serious contender?

Guardians of the Galaxy

While Warner Bros. is trying to figure out how to make another Batman movie, Marvel Studios is pretty much unleashing every crazy project it can. The craziest project so far has to be Guardians of the Galaxy. While the comic has been around for awhile, the Guardians definitely don't have the same brand recognition as Iron Man or Captain America. The studio recently released the first official image from the James Gunn-directed film, showing off Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and CGI creatures voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.

Hercules
July 25
There's a really crappy Hercules movie coming out this weekend. You should ignore that one and save up for Dwayne Johnson's version instead. If you have to pick a movie to replace your childhood memories of Disney's cartoon adapted of Hercules, it really should be one starring The Rock in a lion skin, right?

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

Peter Jackson FINALLY wraps up his Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit saga with The Hobbit: There and Back Again. This movie will surely tick off hardcore fans who can't stand the idea that Evangeline Lilly is playing a made-up elf. Guys, Evangeline Lilly is playing an elf. Be cool.

Horrible Bosses 2
Nov. 26
Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman reunite for a Horrible Bosses sequel. Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine join the franchise as a new duo of horrible bosses. It sounds like Kevin Spacey is supposed to be back too — will his character still be in jail?

Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Rob Corddry are ready to take another ride in their Hot Tub Time Machine, but John Cusack won't be returning. No word yet on how this sequel will explain his character's absence, but Adam Scott has joined the cast to replace Cusack.
