BOX OFFICE REPORT (JAN. 10-12): Mark Wahlberg's 'Lone Survivor' Wins Weekend Battle

1. Lone Survivor (NR)
Weekend gross: $38.5 million / Total domestic gross: $38.9 million /
Percent drop: NA
Where's the real Oscar buzz for Lone Survivor? Mark Wahlberg's war film surprised with a $38.5 million opening, blowing away other new releases like The Legend of Hercules (which I'm OK with) and Her (which I'm not OK with). The entire budget for Lone Survivor was only $40 million, which means the movie almost became profitable in just one weekend.

2. Frozen (1st)
Weekend gross: $15.1 million / Total domestic gross: $317.7 million /
Percent drop: 23.0
If you're only counting The Lion King's original run, which grossed $312.9 million, Frozen is now Disney Animation Studio's all-time highest grossing film. Of course, The Lion King popped back into theaters a few more times since its original run, eventually racking up $422.8 million. While I'd love to see Frozen make a run at that number, that's still a tall order for Frozen.

3. The Wolf of Wall Street (4th)
Weekend gross: $9.0 million / Total domestic gross: $78.6 million /
Percent drop: 32.0
The Wolf of Wall Street continues to move in on $100 million, and if it gets a few Oscar nominations this week, Martin Scorsese's latest film should be able to reach that milestone.

4T. American Hustle (5th)
Weekend gross: $8.6 million / Total domestic gross: $101.6 million /
Percent drop: 30.7
While The Wolf of Wall Street is still on its way to $100, American Hustle broke that barrier over the weekend, pulling in $8.6 million to reach $101.6 million. Like The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle should benefit from some Oscar nom glory later this week.

4T. The Legend of Hercules (NR)
Weekend gross: $8.6 million / Total domestic gross: $8.6 million /
Percent drop: NA
I really thought that The Legend of Hercules wouldn't break $5 million during its opening weekend. I mean, was anyone really talking about this movie? Was anyone excited about it? When Dwayne Johnson plays the character later this year in Hercules: The Thracian Wars, we'll talk about a Hercules movie that should be a fun time.

Next week's predictions
1. Ride Along
2. Lone Survivor
3. Devil's Due
4. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
5. Frozen
