BOX OFFICE REPORT (JAN. 3-5): 'Frozen' Retakes No. 1 Spot, Not Scared of 'Paranormal Activity'

1. Frozen (2nd)
Weekend gross: $20.7 million / Total domestic gross: $297.8 million /
Percent drop: 27.5
Frozen's amazing run continued this past weekend, with the film jumping back into the No. 1 spot. Disney's latest is now just a few million dollars away from hitting the $300 million mark. Frozen is already the highest grossing movie under the Second Disney Renaissance and has outgrossed every other Disney Animated Studios film besides The Lion King.

Here's where things get tricky — by one definition, Frozen has a shot at becoming the highest grossing Disney Animated Studios film period. If we're only counting the $312.9 million that The Lion King pulled in during its original studio run, Frozen can beat that. However, if we're counting the $422.8 million that The Lion King grossed over its combined original run, additional run and 3D re-release, it looks like Frozen is going to have to settle for No. 2.

2. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (NR)
Weekend gross: $18.2 million / Total domestic gross: $18.2 million /
Percent drop: NA
Has the Paranormal Activity series maxed out its box office potential? While Paranormal Activity movies were opening to $50 million-plus weekends as recently as 2011, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones could only scrounge up $18.2 million during its first weekend. How Paranormal Activity 5 (which will actually be the sixth movie in the series) performs this October will tell us whether or not we'll see any more installments past 2014.

3. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (1st)
Weekend gross: $16.3 million / Total domestic gross: $229.6 million /
Percent drop: 44
When it comes to third weekends, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trails its predecessor's performance. The second Hobbit movie is also just barely avoiding having the lowest gross of the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit series through three weekends, with its $229.4 million topping The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King's $228.3.

4. The Wolf of Wall Street (5th)
Weekend gross: $13.4 million / Total domestic gross: $63.3 million /
Percent drop: 27
The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle switched place this weekend, each bringing in around $13 million. Leonardo DiCaprio's film has a shot at breaking $100 million domestically, a task that should become much easier once Oscar nominations are announced in less than two weeks. A Best Picture, Best Director or Best Actor nomination could be what The Wolf of Wall Street needs to get the momentum it'll take to pass $100 million.

5. American Hustle (4th)
Weekend gross: $13.2 million / Total domestic gross: $88.7 million /
Percent drop: NA
Speaking of breaking the $100 million barrier, it looks like American Hustle is going to become the second David O. Russell film to accomplish that feat. While The Fighter got close in 2010, topping out at $93.6 million, Silver Linings Playbook grossed $132.1 million last year. Could American Hustle ride out its own Oscar momentum to pass that total?

Next week's predictions
1. Frozen
2. Her
3. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
4. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
5. Lone Survivor
