BOX OFFICE REPORT (MAY 16-18): 'Godzilla' Stomps to a Monstrous $93.2M Opening Weekend

Godzilla is once again king. Sure, he's been king of the monsters for decades, but now the big guy is king of the box office. Director Gareth Edwards' reboot scored the second highest opening weekend of 2014 (trailing only Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million first weekend) and the more than doubling the opening weekend of 1998's disastrous Godzilla movie, which grossed $44 million its first weekend.

Godzilla will have some serious competition when X-Men: Days of Future Past opens next weekend, but Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures has enough confidence that the film will keep performing strongly as the summer goes on, already planning a sequel.

2. Neighbors (1st)

In its sophomore weekend, Neighbors fell to second place but still pulled in an impressive $26 million in the face of Godzilla's might. Neighbors' $91.5 million total domestic gross already ranks No. 1 on director Nicholas Stoller's career resume. Forgetting Sarah Marshall's $60.2 million was previously Stoller's highest grossing movie.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2nd)

The Spider-Man franchise is struggling. There was a time when the Spider-Man films were box office monsters, but in The Amazing Spider-Man 2's third weekend, it got thrashed by a real monster, barely keeping up with Godzilla. After three weekends, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has grossed $172.2 million, which ranks fifth out of the five Spider-Man movies. The next lowest gross through three weekends was The Amazing Spider-Man's $228.6. Both of these movies are nowhere near what Spider-Man 2 had grossed through three weekends: $302.3 million.

There have been rumors that Sony might finally sell the cinematic rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel, and it wouldn't be a surprise now. A giant check from Marvel and Disney could be a safer bet for Sony than putting the money into producing and marketing another Spider-Man movie.

4. Million Dollar Arm (N)

Weekend gross: $10.5 million / Total domestic gross: $10.5 million / 
Percent drop: NA
Jon Hamm might not be a movie star. With Mad Men ending next year, a movie like Million Dollar Arm was supposed to kickstart Hamm's movie career. With just $10.5 million in its opening weekend, Million Dollar Arm didn't accomplish that task. For comparison, past Disney feel-good sports movie like Miracle and The Rookie opened with $19.4 million and $16 million respectively.

5. The Other Woman (3rd)

Weekend gross: $6.3 million / Total domestic gross: $71.7 million / 
Percent drop: 34.4

If giant monsters, out-of-control frats, teenagers with superpowers and Jon Hamm weren't even to draw you into a movie theater this past weekend, there was The Other Woman.
