BOX OFFICE REPORT (MAY 2-4): 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Spins a $92M Opening Weekend
Weekend gross: $92 million / Total domestic gross: $92 million /
Percent drop: NA
When I first saw that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 grossed $92 million its opening weekend, I thought that was a pretty nice number. Then I remembered that $92 million in one weekend hasn't really meant much since the very first Spider-Man movie opened to $114 million back in 2002. Movies in this franchise were once surefire box office record breakers. After a trilogy, a reboot and another sequel, moviegoers just aren't as excited about Spider-Man as they once were.
2. The Other Woman (1st)
Weekend gross: $14.2 million / Total domestic gross: $47.3 million /
Percent drop: 42.7
I guess if you weren't interested in seeing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this weekend, you went to The Other Woman. Of course, there should be a slice of the movie-going audience that loves both superheroes and Kate Upton ...

3. Heaven Is for Real (3rd)
Weekend gross: $8.7 million / Total domestic gross: $65.6 million /
Percent drop: 39.4
Heaven Is for Real stayed in the top five for the third straight weekend. At this pace, could Heaven Is for Real cross the $100 million mark?

4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2nd)
Percent drop: 52.1
While Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues to add to its impressive domestic total, the movie is has already achieved the highest ranking among Marvel Cinematic Universe movies possible. The Captain America sequel is destined to stay at No. 5, as Iron Man 2's $312.4 million is still pretty far away.
5. Rio 2 (4th)
Weekend gross: $7.6 million / Total domestic gross: $106.5 million /
Percent drop: 45.3
Percent drop: 45.3
For the third weekend in a row, Rio 2 trailed the first Rio's success at the same point. I guess those brilliant commercials and trailers with a cartoon bird singing "I Will Survive" just didn't work ...
Next week's predictions
1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
2. Neighbors
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4. Heaven Is for Real
5. The Other Woman
