BOX OFFICE REPORT (JULY 25-27): Scarlett Johansson's 'Lucy' Overpowers Dwayne Johnson's 'Hercules'
1. Lucy (N)
Weekend gross: $44 million / Total domestic gross: $44 million /
Percent drop: NA
Lucy gave Scarlett Johansson the biggest non-Marvel Cinematic Universe opening weekend of her career. Thanks to a $44 million first weekend, Johansson was able to to defeat Dwayne Johnson's Hercules, a movie that was billed a potential blockbuster itself. Hercules had a budget over twice as large as Lucy's, making Lucy's victory all the sweeter.
2. Hercules (N)
Weekend gross: $29 million / Total domestic gross: $29 million /
Percent drop: NA
I really wanted to compare Johnson and Brett Ratner's Hercules to Disney's animated Hercules, but it looks like the Disney version didn't have one wide opening weekend. It wasn't until that movie's third weekend in theaters that it got into more than 2,000 theaters. If we want to count that as the animated Hercules' opening weekend, that movie debuted to $35.6 million. Let's go with that. The Rock may be a movie star, but he's no match for an animated version of Hercules where Danny DeVito voices a character.

3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (1st)
Weekend gross: $16.4 million / Total domestic gross: $172.1 million /
Percent drop: 54.8
Through just three weekends, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is less than $5 million away from passing the total of its predecessor. Over the course of Rise of the Planet of the Apes' lifetime, that movie grossed $176.7 million. By this time next week, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will have not only passed that movie but also passed Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes ($180 million) reboot to become the franchise's top earner.

4. The Purge: Anarchy (2)
Percent drop: 66.8
After opening behind its predecessor, The Purge: Anarchy played catchup over the past week and now stands less than a million away from The Purge.
5. Planes: Fire and Rescue (3rd)
Weekend gross: $9.3 million / Total domestic gross: $35.1 million /
Percent drop: 46.9
Percent drop: 46.9
Planes: Fire and Rescue, however, is failing to keep up with last summer's Planes. Through two weekends, the original Planes had grossed $45.3 million. Fire and Rescue is more than $10 million behind.
Next week's predictions
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. Lucy
3. Hercules
4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
5. Get on Up
