Disney's 'Into the Woods' Adaption Debuts Its First Trailer

Usually if you hear that there's a cinematic adaption of a musical coming to theaters and Rob Marshall is directing it, that's a good thing. That combination has already resulted in Chicago winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Fans of Into the Woods aren't all that excited about Marshall's upcoming adaption of their favorite play, though.

Based on what Into the Woods creator Stephen Sondheim has been saying about the adaption, it sounds like Disney has neutered much of the risqueness and innuendo from the movie. Of course, Sondheim has since backtracked and claimed that the Disney version will "not only a faithful adaptation of the show, it is a first-rate movie."

The first trailer for Into the Woods debuted on Thursday, and while there's not much to it, there should be enough to get fans of the musical going. Is Meryl Streep right for The Witch? (Spoiler alert: It doesn't matter what you think. Streep's name is now automatically included as one of the five Oscar nominees for Best Actress.) Is Anna Kendrick an accurate Cinderella? Why doesn't the trailer actually show Johnny Depp as the The Wolf?

Into the Woods stars Streep, Depp, Kendrick, James Corden and Chris Pine. The movie opens on Dec. 25.
