BOX OFFICE REPORT (AUG. 15-17): 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Sadly Won the Weekend Again

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1st)
Weekend gross: $28.4 million / Total domestic gross: $117.6 million /
Percent drop: 56.7
Look, I can't keep complaining about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles performing well at the box office. The movie has won the past two weekends now. Do we have to pretend it's a critical hit, though? I keep seeing commercials for Ninja Turtles proclaiming: "Any way you slice it, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a winner." A winner? Really? Like we're going to be hearing its name on Oscar night? C'mon.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (2nd)
Weekend gross: $24.7 million / Total domestic gross: $222.3 million /
Percent drop: 41.3
Guardians of the Galaxy has worked its way up to become the sixth highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film. This movie isn't showing signs of slowing down and should easily pass Captain America: The Winter Soldier within the next few weeks. When it does that, Guardians of the Galaxy could be the highest grossing movie of 2014.

3. Let's Be Cops (N)
Weekend gross: $17.7 million / Total domestic gross: $26.1 million /
Percent drop: NA
A $17.7 million weekend isn't the greatest opener, but if you're Luke Greenfield, it's a career high mark. The highly underrated The Girl Next Door, Greenfield's directorial debut, opened to a measly $6 million in 2004. Let's Be Cops almost tripled that number.

4. The Expendables 3 (N)
Weekend gross: $16.2 million / Total domestic gross: $16.2 million /
Percent drop: NA
With each installment, the Expendables franchise has opened to lower and lower numbers. The Expendables 3's $16.2 million opening weekend trails The Expendables 2's $28.6 million opener and The Expendables' $34.8 million. Yes, this franchise once had weekends with almost $35 million coming in. If The Expendables 3 had been that successful, it would've won this weekend.

5. The Giver (N)
Weekend gross: $12.8 million / Total domestic gross: $12.8 million /
Percent drop: NA
Yikes, The Giver could only muster $12.8 million. This adaption came way too late, decades after the book was published and after movies like The Hunger Games and Divergent, two films that made it seem like The Giver was just another dystopian teen movie.

Next week's predictions
1. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
4. If I Stay
5. Let's Be Cops
