BOX OFFICE REPORT (AUG. 22-24): 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Back on Top, 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' Flops

1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2nd)
Weekend gross: $17.6 million / Total domestic gross: $251.9 million /
Percent drop: 29.8
Guardians of the Galaxy has reclaimed its box office crown, taking it back from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In its fourth weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy dropped just under 30 percent, allowing it to top Ninja Turtles and three new releases.

One of those new releases was Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which couldn't even scrap together a $6.5 million opening weekend. The original Sin City opened to $29.1 million in 2005.

Things are looking much better for Guardians of the Galaxy, though, as the movie has now become the biggest box office hit of this summer. Guardians moved past Transformers: Age of Extinction this weekend, passing that movie's $243.8 million domestic gross. Next up for Guardians? The top spot for 2014. Only Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.8 million) and The Lego Movie ($257.7 million) stand in the way.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1st)
Weekend gross: $16.8 million / Total domestic gross: $145.6 million /
Percent drop: 41.1
Has everyone who wanted to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles reboot slipped to second place this past weekend, falling to a movie that's been in theaters for almost a month. I guess when that movie's Guardians of the Galaxy, the top movie of the summer, it's not really something to be embarrassed about. Then again, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has many aspects that it should be embarrassed about — but isn't.

3. If I Stay (N)
Weekend gross: $16.4 million / Total domestic gross: $16.4 million /
Percent drop: NA
Chloe Grace Moretz's attempt to find her own version of The Fault in Our Stars only mustered a third-place opening weekend. If I Stay started out strong on Friday, winning the weekend's first day. By the end of the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had sent If I Stay to third place.

4. Let's Be Cops (3rd)
Weekend gross: $11 million / Total domestic gross: $45.2 million /
Percent drop: 38.2
Let's Be Cops isn't winning any awards, but the movie is holding steady at the box office. The movie fell roughly 38 percent in its second weekend. Let's Be Cops grossed almost double what Sin City: A Dame to Kill For could pull in during its opening weekend.

5. When the Game Stands Still (N)
Weekend gross: $9 million / Total domestic gross: $9 million /
Percent drop: NA
Were there even commercials for When the Game Stands Still?

Next week's predictions
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
3. As Above/So Below
4. The November Man
5. If I Stay
