Joaquin Phoenix in Final Talks for 'Doctor Strange'

Joaquin Phoenix is getting close to making his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe official. According to Collider, Phoenix is in final talks with Marvel Studios for the lead in Doctor Strange.

We learned last month that Phoenix was in talks for the role with several sources qualifying the news with the belief that the actor was still weighing whether to accept the offer from Marvel. It's been a long time since Phoenix did a blockbusterish movie, with his recent work pretty much coming solely in Oscar-caliber movies like Her and The Master.

It's long been rumored that Marvel wants to make Doctor Strange the centerpiece of Phase Three and Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr.'s time as Iron Man is dwindling — Phoenix is the star the studio will need to build the future of its megafranchise around in the future. A commitment like this wouldn't be something that Phoenix would jump into quickly.

Collider reports that we should get an official announcement on the Doctor Strange casting soon. Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson and is scheduled to open on July 18, 2016.
