FURIOUS 7 Races to a $143.6M Opening Weekend, Ninth Biggest in Box Office History

Moviegoers showed up in record numbers to see Paul Walker's final Fast and Furious film, giving Furious 7 a $143.6 million opening weekend. Not only was this easily the best opener for the franchise, but it also the ninth biggest opening weekend in box office history. Furious 7's $143.6 million ranks ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon's $142.8 million but behind Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million.

Furious 7 grossed more in one weekend than 2 Fast 2 Furious ($127.2 million) and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift ($62.5 million) did in their opening weekends. It's amazing how this franchise has morphed into a box office monster, with the most recent four installments all improving on the performance of their predecessor.

The rest of April should be clear for Furious 7 to continue dominating the box office. If this movie can't stand up to Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 in two weekends, it'll be pretty sad. When Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1, though, it'll be a different story. We could see Furious 7's opening weekend get trumped by $100 million.

Universal hasn't greenlit another Fast and Furious movie yet, but Vin Diesel has already been talking about what fans'll see in a sequel. When the sixth sequel of a franchise makes $143.6 million, there's no reason to stop making sequels.
