AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Scores Second-Highest Second Weekend in Box Office History With $77.2M

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a box office behemoth, but it's still playing catchup with its predecessor. After scoring a $191.3 million debut last weekend (which was good enough for the second-best opening weekend ever), Avengers: Age of Ultron racked up a $77.2 million second weekend ... also good for the second-best second weekend ever. The movie trails only The Avengers' $103.1 million second weekend.

A big factor in Age of Ultron's inability to match its predecessor's monster second weekend was the 59.6 percent drop between last weekend and this weekend. The Avengers only fell 50.3 percent between those frames, allowing it to perform much stronger in its second frame.

In 2012, The Avengers held onto the top spot at the box office for three weekends, only falling to Men in Black 3. Avengers: Age of Ultron will have some pretty stiff competition next weekend, with Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2 opening.
