Marvel Wants SELMA Director Ava DuVernay to Helm BLACK PANTHER or CAPTAIN MARVEL
Marvel Studios wants Selma director Ava DuVernay to helm one of its upcoming movies. TheWrap reported on Tuesday that the studio is courting DuVernary for what the website is calling one of Marvel's "diverse movies."
Yeah, apparently that means Black Panther or Captain Marvel. You know, "diverse movies."
If we can get past fencing movies that happen to be about black or female superheroes as separate from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the possibility of DuVernay's involvement with these movies is great news. Selma was somehow worthy of a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars but wasn't good enough to earn a Best Picture or Best Actor nod. Landing a huge movie like Black Panther would show the world that DuVernary can helm any kind of film.
If she signs on, DuVernary will be the first female director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Patty Jenkins almost got that title, but she left Thor: The Dark World. (Jenkins is now directing Wonder Woman for Warner Bros.)
Both Black Panther and Captain Marvel need a director. Black Panther is scheduled to hit theaters on July 6, 2018, and will star Chadwick Boseman as the title character. Captain Marvel is opening on Nov. 2, 2018. Marvel hasn't announced an actress to lead that project yet.
