TOY STORY 3 Director Lee Unkrich to Direct Dia de los Muertos Movie COCO for Pixar
There's been a mysterious movie referred to as The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dia de los Muertos on Pixar Studios' calendar for several years now. Other than knowing that Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich was going to helm the movie we didn't know much about the project.
Pixar pulled back the curtain on this movie during the D23 Convention over the weekend, revealing that Unkrich's next movie would be titled Coco.
"As artists and filmmakers, we couldn't help but be drawn to the striking visuals of Dia de los Muertos,” Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson said in a statement. "But it was the celebration's core themes of family, remembrance and connection across generations that resonated within and truly inspired us. Dia de los Muertos is as singular as the Mexican culture, while at the same time completely universal in its message. In our story, the celebration of Dia de los Muertos serves as the perfect backdrop for our main character to ask where he comes from, what his place is within his family, and how families stay woven together across time through the simple act of remembrance."
Coco will follow Miguel, a 12-year-old boy exploring his roots during the holiday of Dia de los Muertos. The movie is scheduled for a Nov. 22, 2017, release.
Excited to lift the curtain a bit on what we’ve been working on so hard. #Coco #D23EXPO pic.twitter.com/bDGFzZo0WC
