Aaron Sorkin Will Write the (Official) Steve Jobs Movie
Just like Snow White, Steve Jobs is the subject of dueling biopics right now. On one hand, you have the unofficial biopic Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher. On the other hand, you have Steve Jobs, which will be based on Walter Isaacson's sanctioned biography of the Apple visionary. I'm obviously rooting for the latter project, and you should be too. Sony bought rights to Isaacson's book shortly after Jobs died last year, with Scott Rudin signing on to produce. Please note that Sony and Rubin were part of the team that produced The Social Network to critical acclaim.
After being rumored to want the job, Aaron Sorkin has now signed on to be the film's screenwriter. The New York Times broke the news late Tuesday night.
This is fantastic news. I loved The Social Network (and still believe it should have won the Oscar for Best Picture), and I devoured Isaacson's Jobs biography. Jobs was an unbelievable innovator who changed the world through his inventions. He was also a complex personality, one that we're still trying to decipher. For Steve Jobs, the film, to be a success, it has to have a brilliant team behind it. So far, that brilliant team is being assembled perfectly.
Steve Jobs is still in need of a director. If Sony wants to stop pretending that it's not actively trying to duplicate the success of The Social Network, it should just bring David Fincher on board. Seriously, would anyone really care if the team that brought Mark Zuckerberg to life (well, to another life, since he's a real person) got back together and did the same thing with Steve Jobs?
The film doesn't have a release date yet, but I'm going to start putting together some future Oscar pool ballots now.
