ANOTHER BOX OFFICE RECORD: 'The Avengers' Moves Past 'The Dark Knight' for No. 3 All Time

With a $5.65 million Friday, The Avengers brought its total domestic box office gross up to $538.12 million, passing The Dark Knight for No. 3 on the all-time list. The Dark Knight finished its run at $533.35 million and now gives way for Marvel's superhero epic to be the highest grossing movie not made by James Cameron.

Titanic is next on the list with $658.52 million. The Avengers would have to remain relatively strong for the rest of the summer to pass Titanic, something that will also be made harder by a shorter release window for movies today. Titanic played in theaters for a long time, setting records for eighth weekends and beyond.
