Will Seth Meyers Leave 'SNL' for Kelly Ripa?
Multiple sites reported on Thursday that Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers is not only a finalist to replace Regis Philbin on Live! with Kelly, but that the Weekend Update anchor is the frontrunner for the job. In addition to Meyers, former New York Giants football player Michael Strahan and singer Josh Groban were the other finalists for the position.
If these three are the actual finalists for the job, I gotta go with Meyers getting the job. Strahan might be interesting in moderation, but could you imagine having to listen to the guy every single day of the week? (Disclosure: I don't watch the show any day of the week to begin with, but you get what I'm talking about.) Groban's created a small acting career for himself the past few years, with roles in Crazy. Stupid. Love. and The Office. He always plays a jerk though, so I'm not quite sure he can make the transition to warm and friendly morning show co-host.
So if Meyers takes the job, what happens at SNL?
Obviously right now, there's no real answer for this. Meyers hasn't been hired for anything, so according to NBC, it's all business as usual. If Meyers does get hired as Kelly Ripa's new co-host, I would have to imagine that he would step down from his head writer position at SNL. There's no way he could (or should) be able to juggle both of those roles. SNL is always under fire for its writing, and having a head writer who's got another full-time job would only fuel those flames.
Could Meyers hold on to his spot at the Weekend Update desk? That's another story. I could see Meyers sticking around in his Weekend Update role, but I would have to imagine that getting a Weekend Update co-anchor would help him out. SNL has slowly begun cultivating new talent over the past few years, and I'd love to see Taran Killam or Nasim Pedrad get a shot at sitting where SNL greats like Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon and Amy Poehler have sat.
With Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg already gone (and with Jason Sudeikis in SNL limbo), the late-night institution would probably like to have Meyers settle his Live! with Kelly situation before SNL returns in the fall. We're approaching a presidential election run of episodes, and the show is going to need to know who its head writer and Weekend Update anchor is.
