UGH. James Cameron Is Planning an 'Avatar 4' ... and It's Going to Be a Prequel

James Cameron used to be a director who made original, creative and interesting movies like Terminator and Aliens. Now he's openly admitted that he's in the "Avatar business," which I translate as, "You morons gave me $2 billion for that first piece of crap Avatar movie, so I'm going to keep doing it as long as you're still dumb enough to keeping giving me all of your money. Suckers."

Let's put it all on the table here and make sure we're all on the same page. Avatar was not a good movie. Not by any definition of "good." It was an embarrassment that it not only got nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture but that it was also a serious contender for that award. Avatar is a movie with a recycled plot, two-dimensional characters and a borderline-racist message. Once again, Avatar was not a good movie. It did, however, make use of 3D technology better than any movie had and probably has since, making it a spectacle in theaters. If you didn't see Avatar in theaters and in 3D, there is no point in watching it now. In fact, no one should ever watch Avatar again.

Sadly, Cameron has no plans to stop making Avatar movies. Hit the jump to read what Cameron told MTV about Avatar 4 and the next step for his franchise.

"I haven't really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na'vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world."
"Because when we drop in, even in the first film in 'Avatar 1,' as it will be known in the future, we're dropping into a process that's 35 years in to a whole colonization," Cameron continued of his interest in an "Avatar" prequel. "That will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we'll start, not imitating 'Star Wars,' but it's a logical thing to do because we'll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It's a plan."

Cameron is no longer an artist. He's a money monger. He's going to keep making Avatar movies as long as he keeps getting a $2 billion check for each one. As I pointed out back in May, we have directors like Christopher Nolan making films like Inception and now Rian Johnson making Looper, which all reports say will blow us away in a few weeks. Cameron isn't interested in doing something great anymore. He's only interested in emptying our wallets. Please, please don't get tricked into praising future Avatar movies the way people foolishly praised the first one.

  1. Although I would never say that Avatar is a "great movie", it is indeed an enjoyable movie, let's say a 7 out of 10. But Inception, also, has nothing great about it, it is a mess of a story with things thrown at you just for the sake of it. And if this is your standard of greatness, well, forget about it...
