Weekend Box Office Roundup (September 21-23)

1. End of Watch (N)
$13.00 million ($13.10 million)

1. House at the End of the Street (N)
$13.00 million ($13.10 million)
Well, it appears that we have a tie at the top spot of this past weekend's box office. (At least until the actual numbers come in, that is.) End of Watch and House at the End of the Street both brought in an estimated $13 million, giving both movies the ability to weakly claim box office victory. Seriously, you should have to earn more than $13 million to win a box office weekend.

House at the End of the Street was just a bit behind Jennifer Lawrence's last movie, something called The Hunger Games that opened to a measly $152.54 million its first weekend. End of Watch, while a great film, wasn't any kind of record setter for Jake Gyllenhaal. More importantly, we're all going to see Looper next weekend, right?

3. Trouble with the Curve (N)
$12.70 million ($12.70 million)
Quick, guess what Clint Eastwood movie had the biggest opening weekend. Space Cowboys, which opened to $18.09 million back in 2000. Generally, Eastwood films don't open that big. With Trouble with the Curve, there's also the theory that the actor's Republican National Convention appearance may have tainted some moviegoers opinion of Eastwood, thus dampening the film's box office potential.

4. Finding Nemo 3D (2)
$9.45 million ($29.98 million)*
I dunno if this 3D re-release thing is going to work anymore ... The Lion King 3D's opening weekend was bigger than the numbers Finding Nemo 3D has put up over two weekends.

5. Resident Evil: Retribution (1)
$6.70 million ($33.47 million)
Resident Evil: Retribution fell more than 68 percent from its first to its second weekend. That's rough. This series is on its last legs, isn't it?

Next week's predictions:
1. Looper**
2. Hotel Transylvania
3. House at the End of the Street
4. End of Watch
5. Finding Nemo 3D

*Total gross in 3D release. Finding Nemo already grossed roughly $350 million the first time it was in theaters.
**Seriously, you guys better make Looper No. 1 at the box office or else we're not friends anymore.
