OSCARINDEX: 'Lincoln' Opens Nationwide and Pulls Ahead of the Pack

The Bill Kuchman Chronicle OscarIndex is a nifty chart of the top ten films that you should be paying attention to in order to be ready for the the Oscars. Each film on the list is assigned an OscarIndex number, with the No. 1 film getting a score of 100. The following nine films then get OscarIndex numbers based on how much buzz they have going into the Academy Awards compared to the No. 1 film.

As Lincoln goes into nationwide release today, the Steven Spielberg film notches a third straight week as the No. 1 film on the OscarIndex. This is the best performance yet by Lincoln, with the film putting 24 points behind it and its nearest competitor. Speaking of that competitor, The Master now finds itself within just three points of slipping past Silver Linings Playbook and Les Misérables to drop to No. 4. I said it months ago, and now it definitely appears to be true — The Master peaked way too early. Besides Philip Seymour Hoffman winning Best Supporting Actor, don't expect the Paul Thomas Anderson film to see much action on Oscar night.

Beyond the top ten, Flight has stalled, but Skyfall is showing some signs of life. The acclaimed James Bond film is gaining some ground in the Best Song category, but Skyfall will need make some moves for Best Picture and Best Director if it wants to break into the top ten.
