'300' and 'Watchmen' Composer Tyler Bates Will Score James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

While I couldn't tell you who scored a single one of the previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I definitely know the name who'll be in charge of composing the music for Guardians of the Galaxy. On Wednesday, director James Gunn used his Facebook page to announce that Tyler Bates would be the man behind the podium for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Grateful to be working with my favorite composer, Tyler Bates, on Guardians of the Galaxy. Unlike most films, Tyler writes huge chunks of the score first so that I can actually film to the music. During action scenes and huge dramatic moments we blare the score on set so that the cast, crew, and camera can move in harmony with the music. Music is often an afterthought in film, but never for us. And everything Tyler's done so far has been amazing!
Bates has previously scored several blockbusters, including 300 and Watchmen. It seems like he usually works with Zack Snyder. When Snyder was first announced as the director of Man of Steel, I assumed that Bates would compose the score for that movie too, but Warner Bros. went with Hans Zimmer, the man who scored Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. Bates has also previously worked with Gunn on Slither and Super.
