BOX OFFICE REPORT (AUG. 23-25): 'The Butler' Serves Up Headlines With 'Serves' Puns With Box Office Win

For the second straight weekend, Lee Daniels' The Butler held onto the top spot at the box office, fending off several new challengers, including The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, The World's End and You're Next. The first two movies in that bunch debuted in the top five, but You're Next failed to live up to solid reviews and the performance of other recent horror films like The Conjuring and The Purge.

1. Lee Daniels' The Butler (1)
Weekend gross: $17.02 million / Total domestic gross: $52.28 million / Percent change: -30.9
I think we're going to see Lee Daniels' The Butler on the box office charts for a long time. A combination of strong reviews and Oscar potential should result in a lengthy box office run. We saw this happen last year with several Oscar-nominated movies, including Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty.

2. We're the Millers (2)
Weekend gross: $13.50 million / Total domestic gross: $91.74 million / Percent change: -24.9
We're the Millers will probably becomes Jason Sudeikis' top-grossing movie within the next few weeks. At $91.74 million, We're the Millers trails Horrible Bosses' $117.54 million. As Sudeikis moves onto the post-Saturday Night Live phase of his career, this is exactly what the actor has to be hoping for. Sure, We're the Millers isn't a massive blockbuster, but it builds on the leading man career that Sudeikis is working on.

3. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (N)
Weekend gross: $9.30 million / Total domestic gross: $14.05 million / Percent change: NA
Between The Mortal Instruments and The Host, it looks like the Twilight-lookalike fad is dead. If I've invested money in Shailene Woodley's Divergent, the poor opening for The Mortal Instruments would worry me. Has the YA lit craze ended?

4. The World's End (N)
Weekend gross: $8.94 million / Total domestic gross: $8.94 million / Percent change: NA
The World's End's opening weekend gross of $8.94 million might not seem like much, but it's still the best opening for Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Shaun of the Dead opened to $3.33 million and Hot Fuzz opened to $5.85 million.

5. Planes (4)
Weekend gross: $8.57 million / Total domestic gross: $59.59 million / Percent change: -58.9
Is Planes still around?

Next week's predictions
1. Lee Daniels' The Butler
2. One Direction: This Is Us
3. We're the Millers
4. The World's End
5. Getaway
