REPORT: 'Breaking Bad' Star Bryan Cranston Will Play Lex Luthor in Superman/Batman Movie
Lex Luthor is not in danger. He is the danger. Well, that'll be the case if a report by Cosmic Book News that Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston will play the iconic villain is correct. The site released an article on Saturday filled with alleged news for the upcoming Superman/Batman movie.
Cranston's name has been frequently brought up in conversations about who should play Luthor in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel. If Cranston can channel his Heisenberg-esque darkness into the role, it'll be a welcome change from the cartoonish versions previously brought to the big screen by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey.
Head past the jump for more news on casting Luthor, details on Ben Affleck becoming Batman and whether or not there's a role for Matt Damon in this franchise.
In addition to the Cranston news, Cosmic Book News is also reporting that Warner Bros. considered Mark Strong as Luthor, but decided against it, possibly to keep Strong around as Sinestro under the scenario that 2011's Green Lantern is included in the studio's new Justice League universe.
On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Affleck has a multi-picture deal as Batman, with Cosmic Book News adding that the deal is actually for 13 movies. Odds are that we'll see Affleck's Batman pop up in cameo roles across the Justice League universe, just as Marvel has used Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson for bit parts in many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe installments. Also, just as Popculturology guessed when the Batman news broke, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Affleck could be in line to direct Justice League.
Finally, Cosmic Book News reports that Warner Bros. is trying to bring Damon into the Justice League fold, with the studio considering Affleck's pal for either Aquaman or Martian Manhunter. Unlike the Cranston news, I have doubts about the Damon scoop. Sure, it would be funny to see Affleck and Damon together in these movies, but I don't see Damon doing it.
Bryan Cranston has been cast as Lex Luthor in what is said to be at least a six "appearance" deal (think of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury popping up in every Marvel movie in the run-up to Avengers) and may be as high as ten.
