BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT. 4-6): 'Gravity' Sets an October Record, Begins Oscar Mission
1. Gravity (N)
Weekend gross: $55.55 million / Total domestic gross: $55.55 million / Percent drop: NA
Gravity is by far the greatest film of 2013 that I've seen so far. I know there are some big releases left to go for the year, but I'll be shocked if anything tops it for me. After having Gravity on my list of movies to watch to be be prepared for the following year's Oscars for two years now, the film finally validated the advanced praise I was giving it. Gravity is a stunning accomplishment, and it should give director Alfonso Cuaron the kind of blank check that directors like Christopher Nolan now enjoy.
With its $55.55 million opening, Gravity set a new record for an October weekend, topping the previous record of $52.57 set by Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011. You know what else is impressive about that record? Out of the top ten October openings, eight movies are sequels, prequels or remakes. Besides Gravity, the only other original movie on that list is Shark Tale, which is the movie based around the gimmick of a fish looking and sounding like Will Smith. A real timeless classic, I know.
Interestingly enough, the first weekend of October actually has a bit of an Oscar pedigree to it. The Departed and The Social Network both previously opened at this time of the year. That's a movie that won the Oscar for Best Picture and another movie that should've.
2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (1)
Weekend gross: $21.50 million / Total domestic gross: $60.56 million / Percent drop: 36.8
Through its second weekend, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is almost exactly where its predecessor was in 2009. The first Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs had grossed $60.47 million through two weekends, basically matching the sequel's estimated $60.56 million.

3. Runner Runner (N)
Weekend gross: $7.60 million / Total domestic gross: $7.60 million / Percent drop: NA
Runner Runner ... what an odd movie. I haven't seen it, but then again, not many people did. Where did this movie come from? We're living in a post-Argo/pre-Batman world for Ben Affleck — how did he get sucked into this one? Same goes for Justin Timberlake. He might not be Affleck, but his movie choices haven't been this random.

4. Prisoners (2)
Sadly, I think Prisoners ran out of whatever box office and Oscar steam it may have briefly had.
5. Rush (3)
Weekend gross: $4.41 million / Total domestic gross: $18.10 million / Percent drop: 56.0
How come I keep reading reviews that call Rush one of Ron Howard's best films, yet it's an absolute box office bomb? Thor and race cars don't mix? I should probably see this one soon, since I don't think its long for this world.
Next week's predictions
1. Gravity
2. Captain Phillips
3. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
4. Machete Kills
5. Runner Runner
