Fox Gives 'Saturday Night Live' Writer John Mulaney's Sitcom a Six-Episode Pick-Up

When NBC announced its 2013-14 pickups, a project by Saturday Night Live writer and Stefon co-creator John Mulaney was mysteriously not among the pilots lucky enough to go to series. With SNL/The Tonight Show/Late Night guru Lorne Michaels producing Mulaney's series (which happened to conveniently called Mulaney), the show seemed like a pick-up lock.

NBC's decision to not pick it up, paired with SNL head writer and Weekend Update vacancies created by Seth Meyers departure from SNL, led to speculation that Mulaney wasn't picked up since its star would be needed at SNL. With SNL's new season already in progress and with Mulaney in neither of those positions, it looks like the he's ready to leave the NBC nest.

According to Deadline, Mulaney has received a six-episode pickup at Fox.

Created and written by Saturday Night Live alum Mulaney, the series, tentatively titled Mulaney, stars him and Martin Short. Set in New York and based on Mulaney’s life and stand-up comedy, the show follows an aspiring comedian (Mulaney) coming of age under the influence of his boss (Short), his roommates and his neighbors.

SNL's Nasim Pedrad had been cast in Mulaney's NBC incarnation, but there's no word if she'll remain involved with the series now that it's at Fox.
