'American Horror Story: Coven' Recap: 'The Dead'

We haven't really seen a lot of Madison (Emma Roberts) since the start of this season of American Horror Story: Coven. I had guessed there was more in store for her after we all witnessed "her death." This weeks episode certainly gave her something to put on her future résumé, as she was the most memorable out of the group. Her opening monologue detailing her life after death was ironically the most life we've seen from her once-dead character. Even though the entire monologue was about how she has the inability to feel anything, this feeling of not feeling anything not only makes us want to see more of her, but continues to add to the mystery that surrounds her character.

We also saw more of Kyle (Evan Peters), and now I feel bad for him. He also was given an opening flashback scene where he described his desire to make a difference as an engineer. We already knew about the events going on with his mother at home, but this didn't stop Kyle from being the most driven out of the fraternity group. His realization that his new body is now a blend of tattooed parts from his former friends makes him even angrier, knowing he'll no longer ever have the chance to amount to the person he envisioned himself to be. Whereas Madison seems more alive now that she's back from the dead, Kyle wants nothing more than to go back to the darkness he came from. His state of fragility quickly catches the eye of Madison. Playing into the weirdness of the show even further, even after Madison has sex with him, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) engages in a zombie threesome with Kyle. I didn't really see that coming. Never has a man been able to say so few words. He should write a book on this. It would be an easy read.

Most of the Fiona's (Jessica Lange) scenes took place in the Axeman's (Danny Huston) apartment, and watching the exchange between the two was fun. Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) has always felt abandoned by Fiona, and she's hated her for that. Fiona may be back for Cordelia, but now that Cordelia's realized what she's done to Madison and Myrtle (Frances Conroy), she's out for blood. This war between the Voodoo and the witches may not be as significant as the internal war we're about to see between the outgoing Supreme and the rest of the witches, though. Queenie (Gabourey Sidibie) also decides to abandon the group in favor of the Voodoo, as she turns in Delphine (Kathy Bates) to Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett). Delphine has everything she deserves coming to her, and I'm sure Marie will make sure she gets it.

Although we will be missing American Horror Story next week, we did find out a little more about Season 4 from Ryan Murphy this week. In contrast to the current season, this season "won't be contemporary." The season will also be shot in either New Orleans or Santa Fe. Nothing else is given at this point, but we'll see some clues about the forthcoming season show up as we near the last few episodes of the show.
