Disney Announces May 2016 Release Date for 'Alice in Wonderland' Sequel, With Depp and Wasikowska Returning
Considering that Alice in Wonderland made more than $1 billion globally, it's no surprise that Disney is working on a sequel. At the end of last week, the studio announced that both Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska would return for Alice in Wonderland 2, with the movie hitting theaters on May 27, 2016. I guess every weekend in 2015 has now been claimed.
I wasn't a fan of 2010's Alice in Wonderland. I found it to be creepy, and it relied much too heavily on the schtick that Depp and director Tim Burton had developed over the past few years. If you saw Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Dark Shadows, you know what I'm talking about. Depp slaps on some weird makeup and uses a funny voice, and Depp counts this as a new creative direction.
The Muppets director James Bobin will helm the Alice sequel. Based on The Muppets and what we saw in the trailer for Muppets Most Wanted, this looks like a good swap. Burton needs to find a new approach for his movies. Bobin is fresh, something that could actually help Depp too.
