BOX OFFICE REPORT (FEB. 7-9): 'The Lego Movie' Proves Its Awesomeness With Massive Opening Weekend

1. The Lego Movie (N)
Weekend gross: $69.1 million / Total domestic gross: $69.1 million /
Percent drop: NA
It's not often that one of a year's best films is released at the beginning of February. This is usually a time for studios to dump movies that are both financially and critically troubled. The Lego Movie is neither of those things. No, The Lego Movie is not just going to (probably) be the best animated movie of 2014 — it's the best animated movie since Toy Story 3.

And like Toy Story 3, The Lego Movie dominated the box office during its opening weekend, grossing $69.1 million. That number gives The Lego Movie the all-time second highest February opening weekend, trailing only the $83.8 million that The Passion of the Christ opened with in 2004. I wouldn't expect The Lego Movie to slow down at the box office any time soon, either. If you somehow find someone who saw the film who didn't like it, you should start checking to make sure they're not a robot pretending to be a human.

2. The Monuments Men (N)
Weekend gross: $22.7 million / Total domestic gross: $22.7 million /
Percent drop: NA
What a weird journey for The Monuments Men. George Clooney's film went from being a December release with Oscar buzz to being a February release that came in behind a movie about toys and has a 33 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly enough, The Monuments Men's $22.7 million opening is the best debut of Clooney's directorial career, trumping recent movies like Ides of March ($10.5 million) and Leatherheads ($12.9 million).

3. Ride Along (1st)
Weekend gross: $9.4 million / Total domestic gross: $105.2 million /
Percent drop: 21.9
Ride Along finally passed the $100 million mark. It'll be up against About Last Night, another Kevin Hart movie, next weekend.

4. Frozen (2nd)
Weekend gross: $6.9 million / Total domestic gross: $368.7 million /
Percent drop: 22.6
Frozen is now less than $87 million from becoming a $1 billion movie. Worldwide, the film has made $913.8 million. I'm pretty sure that Frozen hasn't opened in China yet, which could be the fuel the film needs to make $1 billion happen.

5. That Awkward Moment (3rd)
Weekend gross: $5.5 million / Total domestic gross: $16.8 million /
Percent drop: 36.6
At least That Awkward Moment only cost $8 million to make.

Next week's predictions
1. The Lego Movie
2. About Last Night
3. Robocop
4. The Monuments Men
5. Endless Love
