Paul Bettany to Play The Vision in 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Paul Bettany has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its birth, but only now will the actor have the chance to show his face. After playing JARVIS, Tony Stark's AI butler, in several films, Bettany has been cast as The Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, according to Variety.

In the comics, The Vision was created by Ultron to aide him in his fight against Hank Pym and the Avengers. The Vision wound up turning against his creator and joining the Avengers, spurring his father figure, just as Ultron had turned against Pym, his own creator.

When Ultron was first announced as the villain in the upcoming Avengers sequel, a lot of people, myself included, were guessing that Ultron would come as a result of Stark's increasingly sentient Iron Man suits breaking bad, with JARVIS evolving into Ultron's personality. Under that scenario, it would have made perfect sense for Bettany to voice Ultron. With James Spader officially playing Ultron, that rumor went out the window. Will Ultron somehow take control of JARVIS now? That would explain director Joss Whedon casting Bettany for The Vision. It just seems weird to give Bettany a new role if it doesn't tie into his role as JARVIS.

Another note about The Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron: The Vision has long been romantically tied to the Scarlet Witch, with the two actually getting married and having kids at one point. Elizabeth Olsen will play the Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron. Will we see sparks between the two?
