'Late Late Show' Replacement: Neil Patrick Harris, Aisha Tyler, Joel McHale, Amy Schumer Rumored
When NBC announced Jay Leno's retirement, that news was packaged with the announcement that Jimmy Fallon would be taking over The Tonight Show. When David Letterman announced his retirement from Late Show, CBS moved swiftly to make Stephen Colbert his replacement. Heck, even when there was the Late Night opening caused by Fallon's move, it was pretty easy to see that Seth Meyers was going to be the next host of that show. (At least on Popculturology's part, that is.)
Figuring out who will replace Craig Ferguson as host of The Late Late Show is a different story.
Ferguson, who announced on Monday that he would step down from hosting The Late Late Show this December, doesn't have an heir apparent. CBS doesn't have a farm system like NBC has with Lorne Michaels and Saturday Night Live. The game of who will be the next host of The Late Late Show is the most wide open late-night TV guessing game since, well, the last time we needed a new The Late Late Show host.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS isn't going to rush into a choice.
"We haven't really thought about it yet," CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler told THR. "We want to let this sink in."
THR also writes that "Tassler says a replacement will not be chosen ahead of the network's May 14 upfront presentation, nor have conversations on The Late Late Show's future taken place."
Despite Tassler's claim that there haven't been conversations over choosing Ferguson's replacement, the site does list several names who are said to be contenders: Neil Patrick Harris, Aisha Tyler, Joel McHale, Amy Schumer, Jason Jones, John Hodgman, Sean Hayes and Michael Ian Black. It's quite a list of names, and I know that CBS says it hasn't even started thinking about this decision, but I have a feeling Harris is the favorite right now.
