Director Edgar Wright Exits Marvel's 'Ant-Man'

After spending years developing the film, Edgar Wright won't direct Marvel's Ant-Man. Set to kick of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man was supposed to bring Wright's unique style into the world of superheroes.

"Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their visions of the film," Marvel and Wright said in a statement. "The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly."

This isn't the first time that a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has changed directors midstream, with Monster director Patty Jenkins quitting Thor: The Dark World and being replaced by Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor. Ant-Man and Wright seemed different, though. There was something exciting about Wright directing a Marvel tentpole movie, kind of like the feeling of seeing James Gunn pulling off Guardians of the Galaxy.

Of course, the average moviegoer will never know this all happened. Marvel will find a new director and prove once again that the matter of who's directing one of its movies doesn't change the fact that it'll clean up at the box office.

Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Corey Stoll and Patrick Wilson. Marvel will probably move swiftly to replace Wright as director.
