Alex Kurtzman to Direct 'Mummy' Reboot
The Mummy is getting rebooted and its going to be helmed by one of the guys responsible for the Star Trek reboot. Alex Kurtzman will direct Universal Studios' The Mummy reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Over the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology," Universal Co-President of Production Jeff Kirschenbaum said. "He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well."
Universal wants to create its own cinematic universe from its classic monsters. In addition to The Mummy, classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Creature From the Black Lagoon will eventually be pulled into this universe. The Mummy is scheduled to launch this franchise on April 22, 2016.
According to THR's report, the new Mummy will be set in modern day and "is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements."
Kurtzman has only one directorial project on his resume, the critically panned People Like Us. He was announced as the director of Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff Venom, but like many parts of Sony's Spider-Man cinematic universe, that project seems to have gotten pushed to the back burner.
