BOX OFFICE REPORT (AUG. 8-10): 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Overperforms to Topple 'Guardians'
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (N)
Weekend gross: $65 million / Total domestic gross: $65 million /
Percent drop: NA
C'mon, America. Last week, you dig such a great job, propelling Guardians of the Galaxy to an August opening weekend box office record. Instead of just going and seeing Guardians a second (or third) time this past weekend, you went and saw Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Weren't you listening to the critics? Or fans of the characters? Or whatever shred of basic humanity you have residing somewhere deep inside of you? A $65 million opener for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was enough to rank as the fourth highest August debut ... and earn a sequel.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy (1)
Weekend gross: $41.5 million / Total domestic gross: $175.9 million /
Percent drop: 56.0
Guardians of the Galaxy couldn't fend off a bunch of mutant turtles, but the movie did continue to rake in the money, adding $41.5 million to reach a domestic gross of $175.9 million. The movie has already passed The Incredible Hulk ($134.8 million) to move up to No. 9 on the Marvel Cinematic Universe domestic box office list and will pass Captain America: The First Avenger ($176.7 million) and Thor ($181 million) within the next day or so. Despite opening slightly lower than Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy had an extremely strong week and is now outpacing the Captain America sequel by more than $27 million.

3. Into the Storm (N)
Weekend gross: $18 million / Total domestic gross: $18 million /
Percent drop: NA
Guys, I don't even know what to say about Into the Storm. The movie completely flew under the radar (radar — is that a storm joke?), with more emphasis being put on the movie's special effects than the actual characters or plot.

4. The Hundred-Foot Journey (N)
Percent drop: NA
So I guess if you weren't interested in seeing Guardians of the Galaxy again or subjecting yourself to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Hundred-Foot Journey was calling your name. If you've watched Chopped, The Next Food Network Star or any other Food Network show over the past few weeks, you've probably seen commercials for this movie. Disappointingly, Guy Fieri was not in The Hundred-Foot Journey.
5. Lucy (2nd)
Weekend gross: $9.3 million / Total domestic gross: $97.4 million /
Percent drop: 48.9
Percent drop: 48.9
Lucy is closing in on the $100 million mark, making the movie Scarlett Johansson's first non-Marvel Cinematic Universe film to do so.
Next week's predictions
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. The Giver
4. The Expendables 3
5. Let's Be Cops
