Collecting every single tweet, Instagram post or statement expressing sorrow over
the passing of Robin Williams would be an impossible task. Even after I pulled together over a dozen tweets reflecting on the loss of the Oscar-winning comedian, they were still coming in.
Conan O'Brien was the only late-night host who managed to get the news into his Monday episode. O'Brien broke the news to his live studio audience toward the end of the show's taping, passing along only the barebones news about Williams' death that was known at the time. It's not often that late-night hosts get to react to news as it happens, but the news of Williams' death clearly had O'Brien,
Will Arnett and
Andy Richter shaken.
The Academy sent out what many are considering to the be one of the most touching tweets in response to Williams' passing — a picture of the Williams-voiced Genie from
Aladdin with the simple quote, "Genie, you're free.)
Williams' death also drew a statement from President
Barack Obama:
Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin’s family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.
