Russo Brothers Reveal That 'Captain America 3' Will Focus on Relationship Between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes

Over the course of just a few months, Marvel Studios released two of the best superhero movies ever, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy taking the genre to a new level. Thankfully Marvel is playing it smart and bringing back the directors behind both movies for their sequels. In the case of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that would be Joe and Anthony Russo.

The Russo brothers surprised critics by jumping from directing movies like You, Me and Dupree and TV shows like Arrested Development to deliver the political thriller that was The Winter Soldier. Yahoo! Movies talked with the Russo brothers about their plans for Captain America 3, which is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

The Russo brothers told Yahoo! Movies that Captain America 3 will take place a couple years after The Winter Soldier (so how many years after Avengers: Age of Ultron will that be?) and that "although the heart of the movie will be Steve Rogers' complicated relationship with his childhood friend Bucky Barnes, the themes of politics and power will still be in play."

"The character was invented for an explicitly political purpose," Anthony Russo told Yahoo! Movies. "So it's hard to get away from that nature."

Joe and Anthony promise that they'll be "bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier," but they don't go as far as saying whether we'll see Sebastian Stan's Bucky or Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson/Falcon take over the mantle of Captain America. With Chris Evans' contract nearing its end and the actor talking about his desire to move behind the camera in the near future, the prediction that Captain America 3 could end with someone else holding Cap's shield seems accurate.
