Warner Bros. Moves 'Superman v Batman' to March 2016, Announces 11 More DC Comics Movies

With both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America 3 sharing a May 6, 2016, release date, either Warner Bros. or Marvel Studios were going to blink and pull their superhero movie from that spot. On Wednesday, Warner Bros. blinked, moving Batman v Superman to March 25, 2016.

It's not surprising that Warner Bros. backed away from challenging Marvel. The studio just set a massive new August opening weekend box office record with Guardians of the Galaxy. If Marvel can do that with a non-sequel, the potential they have with Captain America 3 in a post-Avengers: Age of Ultron world should scare away any threat.

Warner Bros. didn't just move Batman v Superman on Wednesday — the studio also announced 11 more DC superhero movies, planning out a schedule of films all the way through 2020.

Aug. 5, 2016: Untitled DC film

April 3, 2020: Untitled DC film
June 19, 2020: Untitled DC film
Nov. 20, 2020: Untitled Warner Bros. event film

It's likely that those untitled Warner Bros. event films are Justice League movies, with the rest of movies being individual superhero flicks.

We're going to have a pretty busy superhero movie slate over the next few years. Marvel has already announced 11 of its own Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to be released between now and 2019.

Wow. That's six Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros. superhero movies in 2018. I'm guessing that 2019 and 2020 are only just beginning, as Marvel Studios hasn't announced anything past that May 3, 2019, date.

After Warner Bros. announced these movies on Wednesday, a lot of people on the Internet started talking about how this could be what finally bursts the superhero movie bubble. That's a cute idea, but here's the thing — there is no superhero movie bubble to burst. Superhero movies are a genre now, just like comedies, dramas and science-fiction. Sure, superhero movies will flop, just like like movies from any other genre. That doesn't mean they'll stop making superhero movies. The Internship sucked, but they didn't stop making comedies.
