BOX OFFICE REPORT (SEPT. 26-28): Denzel Washington and 'The Equalizer' Win the Weekend

The big news at the box office this past weekend? Guardians of the Galaxy passed the original Iron Man to become the third highest grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pretty impressive for a film many major news outlets swore would flop.

1. The Equalizer (N)
Weekend gross: $35 million / Total domestic gross: $35 million /
Percent drop: NA
Another movie, another box office victory for Denzel Washington.

2. The Maze Runner (1)
Weekend gross: $17.5 million / Total domestic gross: $58 million /
Percent drop: 46.2
The Maze Runner performed well its second weekend, bringing in enough to beat out The Boxtrolls for second place. Looks like this movie earned its sequel, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, hitting theaters on Sept. 18, 2015. Yes, everything is coming out in 2015.

3. The Boxtrolls (N)
Weekend gross: $17.3 million / Total domestic gross: $17.3 million /
Percent drop: NA
The Boxtrolls couldn't top the box office this past weekend, but it did score the second highest opening weekend for a stop-motion film. Only 2000's Chicken Run did better, grossing $17.5 million in its debut.

4. This Is Where I Leave You (3rd)
Weekend gross: $7 million / Total domestic gross: $22.6 million /
Percent drop: 39.4
This Is Where I Leave You has been in theaters for two weekends? How did I miss that? I love Tina Fey and Jason Bateman.

5. Dolphin Tale 2 (5th)
Weekend gross: $4.8 million / Total domestic gross: $33.7 million /
Percent drop: 45.5
I can't wait for Dolphin Tale 3: Flipper Strikes Back.

Next week's predictions
1. The Maze Runner
2. This Is Where I Leave You
3. No Good Deed
4. A Walk Among the Tombstones
5. Dolphin Tale 2
