'Guardians of the Galaxy' Passes 'Iron Man' to Become Third Highest Grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie

Remember when people were worried Guardians of the Galaxy was going to be Marvel Studios' first flop? Based on a comic book that most people had never heard of and starring unproven talent like Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy was going to be a tough sell.

Then it set an opening weekend record for August.

And now, after less than two months in theaters, Guardians of the Galaxy has become the third highest grossing installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, passing the original Iron Man this past weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy's $319.2 million has toppled Iron Man's $318.4 million, a mark that's stood since 2008.

Guardians now trails just The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Those two movies have grossed $409 million and $623.4 million, so No. 3 is as high as Guardians of the Galaxy is going to go on this list.
