Iron Man Brings 'Civil War' to 'Captain America': More on the Title, Directors of 'Avengers' Sequels

So Robert Downey Jr. is going to join Captain America 3, signing a $40 million-plus-backend deal to add another Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to his portfolio. All signs point to Marvel Studios bringing the Civil War storyline to the big screen.

After the news broke on Monday night, Badass Digest's Devin Faraci revealed that he had been sitting on this news for weeks but didn't have the OK to run the story. Faraci still had some real news to reveal: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America 3 directors Joe and Anthony Russo are in negotiations with Marvel to also helm The Avengers 3 and The Avengers 4 (or whatever the studio winds up calling its big 2019 movie). The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon will step away from his role leading the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Faraci also reports that Marvel Studios is considering either Civil War or Fallen Son as Captain America 3's subtitle. In my opinion, Civil War is the obvious choice, especially with Marvel bringing back the comic in 2015, but Fallen Son would reflect a Captain America who now finds himself against his friend Tony Stark ... and possibly dies at the end of the movie.

I still can't get over how huge this is for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Warner Bros. is fumbling its way to Justice League, Marvel is about to do Age of Ultron, Civil War and the Infinity War. Insane. Faraci apparently has heard that insiders at Marvel think that Warner Bros. may have gotten wind they were adapting Civil War for Captain America 3, which was enough to scare them into moving Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from May 6, 2016. Iron Man versus Captain America trumps Batman versus Superman, I guess.

No word yet on Spider-Man participating in this movie. For a true adaption of Civil War, Marvel Studios is going to need Spidey. Do they get the Andrew Garfield version from Sony? Do they strike a deal to introduce their own version of the character, skipping his origin story and jumping right in? A solid take on Spider-Man would be good for Sony's Amazing Spider-Man franchise, even if it's not the same version of the character.
